The main goal of the course would be for someone who supports trading and activities around trading, to have a better idea of who it is they are supporting and to acquire a general framework of the market they work in.

  • What is Market Data?
  • What do we need it?
  • Structure of the Market
  • Buy-side vs Sell-side
  • On-exchange vs OTC
  • Trading/Matching/Settlement
  • Banks vs asset managers vs investment companies’ vs brokers
  • Broad economic framework: savers/lenders/households/business/govt.
  • What are interest rates?
  • Role of the SARB. Repo rate/Risk free rate vs bank Prime/Open Window operations.
  • Inflation – what is it? How is measured?
  • Role of the Government and regulators.
  • Taxes. What are they for? Taxation vs Borrowing, difference between monetary and fiscal policy and why it counts. GDP/GNP.
  • Forex in/outlows. Current account. Global Forex markets.
